The Vintage Ports represent the quintessence of the wines produced at Quinta das Carvalhas. Made from selected plots of old vines with both north and south-facing exposures, as well as mature vines of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Sousão, these wines of immense power and quality are known for their remarkable aromatic complexity, richness of tannins, and excellent acidity, giving them great potential to evolve in the bottle.
Vintage Ports are produced only in years of excellence, representing a small portion of a harvest. Historically, these exceptional, vigorous, and full-bodied wines are made, on average, every three years in a decade.
The grapes are foot-trodden in traditional granite lagares, which, due to their shape, allow for perfect contact between the must and the skins, enabling greater extraction. The fermentation is then interrupted by the addition of grape spirit, followed by ageing in oak casks for a period of 2 years. After ageing in wooden casks, the wine is bottled between the second and third year after the harvest.
